As depicted in the constitution the president has the power to pardon.

The power to pardon is to alleviate a felon of their crimes and let them live as a free man or woman. The power is open to anyone who the president choses, but there are unspoken rules on how it works. No one is going to pardon a serial killer, but a prime example may be pardoning someone with a petty crime or with possession of drugs.

The president typically will utilize this power at the end of his or her presidency because there is no need to cognate wooing the votes of the constituents.

In the media currently President Trump has gained lots of heat for various investigations. Mostly for the involvement of Russia in elections, but Trump is also under fire for the multitude of sexual assault allegations against him.

Whatever the case may be, Trump released a statement regarding his pardoning power.

Trump stated in a recent tweet that:

As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong? In the meantime, the never ending Witch Hunt, led by 13 very Angry and Conflicted Democrats (& others) continues into the mid-terms!”

Trump has essentially stated that if charged with any crime that he could pardon himself.

This may be true. The constitution has no strict guidelines regarding pardoning including if one can pardon themselves.

In hindsight that seems plausible if the power allows one to pardon anyone, emphasis on anyone. However, there are unspoken rules that people follow. It seems that there would be a sense of morality which to a certain extent their is.

Later on Trump did release another statement assuring that he wouldn’t use his pardon power for himself, but that is simply because he claims he has yet to do anything wrong.

The debate is whether or not one is able to pardon themselves and if that is unconstitutional.
