ABCs reboot sitcom “Roseanne” brought in high ratings for the network until earlier this week when the show was abruptly canceled following racist tweets sent out by the show’s star Roseanne Barr.

Barr tweeted on Tuesday night, “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” Barr, an outspoken Trump supporter and avid conservative, was responding to a tweet about Valerie Jarret, a former top Obama aide.

The star received instant backlash following the racist tweet and took to Twitter once again to apologize. She wrote, “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me — my joke was in bad taste.”

However, the actresses efforts were too late. ABC announced that they would be cancelling “Rosanne” which was already in production for its second season to air this fall. Before ABCs announcement multiple actors on the show, including: Emma Kenny, who plays the granddaughter on the show, tweeted out that she was in the process of quitting the show before the announcement was made and producer Wanda Sykes also made a similar tweet.

Sara Gilbert, who plays the daughter on the show, tweeted that the comments were, “abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show.”

It was no easy decision for ABC to pull the plug because the show puled in massive ratings for the network and over 200 jobs were to be lost in the crew following an immediate cancellation. However, ABC said it had to be done.

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement,”Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”

Barr seemed unfadsed by the cancellation tweeting, “Don’t feel sorry for me, guys!!-I just want to apologize to the hundreds of people, and wonderful writers (all liberal) and talented actors who lost their jobs on my show due to my stupid tweet.”

The comedian also blamed her remarks on the drug Ambien, which she was taking to help her sleep at the time. Critics were skeptical of the legitmate nature of the claims as this was not the first time Barr has made a controversial comment publicly.

In two seprate tweets Barr claimed, “guys I did something unforgiveable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting — it was memorial day too — i went 2 far & do not want it defended — it was egregious Indefensible. I made a mistake I wish I hadn’t but…don’t defend it please,” and “Not giving excuses for what I did(tweeted) but I’ve done weird stuff while on ambien — cracked eggs on the wall at 2am etc.”

Sanofi, the maker of Ambien, responded with a statement that shot down her claims, “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.”
