Just last week there was a controversial arrest of two African American men at a Starbucks in Philadelphia. The two men were sitting quietly and were waiting for a friend. The two

men were arrested for trespassing because they were not ordering anything. But in an interview with Good Morning America the men explained that they were only in the stroe for two minutes.

A video of the arrested was leaked and it upset people all over the country. In response Starbucks is closing 800 of their stores for one day so their staff can be apart of a racial bias training.

The racial bias training will be on May 29th and over 175,000 employees will take part. Civil rights experts like former US Attorney General Eric Holder, Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative, Sherrilyn Ifill of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Heather McGhee of Demos, and Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League will all be apart of the training.

This arrests been an outlet from protests and boycotts against Starbucks, for people of color this is a familiar story for them many people have faced suspicion while in a public space or store. “It’s part of a very, very long story about African-Americans and public accommodations and how we are treated in public spaces,” Ifill, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund director who will help with the training curriculum, told NPR on Wednesday.

Many experts say that anti racial bias training is most of the time ineffective so this is crucial that Starbucks gets this right. Restaurant racism has been rooted in our society for way to long and Starbucks could use their mistakes as a time to help put an end towards racial bias and racism in public places.
