The nation wide college decision deadline, May 1st, is swiftly approaching. There some key factors to keep in mind while, dealing with the college decision process for freshman, sophomore, juniors, and seniors.

Most Important Advice:
Think about colleges early (9th,10th grade) in you high school career. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!

In the 11th grade, narrow down your top colleges and have a major in mind.

First, separate the differences between a need and a want. Have particular criteria for your colleges involving:
Housing
Scholarships
Sororities / Fraternities
A particular sport
A particular major
In state or out-of-state
Large universities or small universities
Etc

Ask teachers and staff for your recommendation letters before  junior year is over. That way, when you get back from summer vacation your recommendations will not delay your application process.

Seniors, start the process of applying to colleges as early as August. Meanwhile, make sure your college essay is done by the end of summer. Learn to communicate with your counselors, they will give you the guidance needed to succeed. Listen to the advice given to you by those who have been through the college process. Meanwhile, take advantage of all the resources provided to you.

Students, make sure you apply to more than one college. When making the college decision, do not go based off of where everyone else is going or where your closest friend is choosing to go. Always have a plan A, B, C, and D. Don’t catch senioritis, it will cause more work for the student in the long run. Make your own decision because you are the one that is going to have to live with it for the next few years of your life.
