The article “Netflix Adds a Warning Video to ‘13 Reasons Why” by Peter Libbey informs viewers that Netflix is adding a warning stating that the popular television show is controversial.

The TV show is “being criticized for how the series’ first season depicted suicide.” The show’s intended purpose was to confront the uncomfortable topic and makes it less uncomfortable.
They attempted to do so by presenting it in a manner than teenagers can relate to.

For instance, every character in the show represents one stressor in the main character, Hanna’s, life. She left tapes to tell the people in her life why they pushed her to make her life-ending decision. They showed how something so little can cause serious damage to an individuals mental health.

A study brought by Netflix showed that “nearly three-quarters of teen and young adult viewers said the show made them feel more comfortable processing tough topics.” Mental health has never been a comfortable topic of discussion. However, now children are talking to their parents about the show.

Majority of parents are becoming interested into these topics, as they should. The researcher from Netflix has indicated that the majority of parents felt that while the show brought up important topics, they wanted more resources from [Netflix].”

In response to parents concerns, Netflix created a warning video. “The video, which features the show’s actors out of character, explains that the series deals with issues including sexual assault, substance abuse and suicide. It suggests that if a viewer is struggling with these issues, he or she may want to avoid the show or watch it with a trusted adult.”

Watching this show can cause intentions to rise . Children should ask their parents before watching this show.

This topic is important because it elaborates on mental health issues. Especially without making their viewers feel uncomfortable. There will be a second reason to 13 Reasons Why. The second season is coming out later this.
