Tiger Woods is BACK..well… almost…

All weekend there has been buzz about Tiger Woods being back on the tour, Tiger being in contention to win the Masters next month, Tiger this, Tiger that. It was a feel of the early 2000’s, when Tiger was dominating every tour in his path, and was on pace to break the once thought to be unbreakable Major wins record. Tiger came into the Valspar championship having won 14 major championships, 4 behind the luxurious Jack Nicklaus for first all time.

He had high expectations, after coming in 12th in the Honda Classic 2 weeks ago, he wanted to win this one to cement his position as a true contender once again. After he shot a 70 (-1) in the first round to place himself three strokes behind the leader, it was clear Tiger was on pace to not only contend but possibly win his first major in over 5 years. His second round was even better, posting a 68 (-4) in a round that included 4 birdies and 1 bogey, a crucial shot that took him off of the lead and had him 1 shot back at the end. His third round was inching towards a vintage Tiger performance, where he shot a 67 (-8). Tiger started off his last round by coming back to Earth a little bit, and showing his 42 years of age. He started off shaky and missed some putts, something that was out of the ordinary when it comes to his latest tournaments. He missed many chances to par, but still had a chance to force the playoff after an astounding 44-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole. However, Woods left it short on the 18th hole to finish in a tie for 2nd at -9.

Although he didn’t come out with the win, Tiger has been a different golf player this time around, it seems he is having fun on the tour, like he is soaking everything in. He seems to be as healthy as he was when he was dominating so long ago. With his comebacks before, there was a sense that Woods was rushing to get back on top, that he was crumbling to the pressure of being “The Great Tiger Woods” again, and his broken back just could not handle all of it. Woods has taken his rehab seriously in this latest comeback and it is paying dividends on the golf course. If Tiger can keep this up, not only it is good for his chances to break the all time mark in major championships won, it is also a good thing for the sport of golf itself, as they have been searching for a face of the sport since Tiger fell off. The crowds at the tours Tiger golfs at and the ooh’s and ah’s have proven one thing, it’s almost like Tiger never left.
