If you look anywhere in the media you will see headlines about the “Governmental Shutdown”, yet most of us don’t really understand what a Government shutdown is.

First, let me explain what a governmental shutdown is; a governmental shutdown is not the complete halt of all United States government actions, just the parts of the government that are considered “nonessential” like national park workers, and passport and visa processors.

During the last governmental shutdown, 850,000 executive-branch workers were laid off for a period of time. The longest on record shutdown lasted nearly 21 days (Newsweek). This is obviously very inconvenient and worries American citizens greatly.

The cause of this shutdown is Congress’s inability to pass a budget plan for the United States new fiscal year. Until Congress passes a budget plan, the government will seize to continue non-essential procedures. The issue with the budget plan is the inability for the Democrats and Republicans to come to a compromise on certain topics. The main issue between Democrats and Republicans is the lack to be able to come to an agreement over the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Trump and most Republicans oppose this program while Democrats stand for DACA. The compromise proposed for the budget was the Child Health Insurance Program which would give low-cost health coverage to children of families that make too much to qualify for medicaid, but not enough to pay for private insurance. Also in some states CHIP would cover care for pregnant women. This was quickly shot down after President Trump tweeted out that he would never support CHIP.

While both political parties are blaming each other for the shutdown, it is evident that Congress needs to come to a conclusion quickly. This halt of progress is leaving governmental workers and citizens on the edge of their seats waiting for the continuation of daily affairs.
