Have you ever been in trouble for something that definitely was not your fault? Many women all over the world feel this way when they get harassed and the comment back is “well, you should not have been wearing that. You were basically asking for it.”

Sexual harassment has been a problem for a while and the responses for it have implied that the victim was at fault. Even in 2017, a time of equality, prosperity, and pride, sexual harassment continues to become a problem.

In a recent meeting in the House of Democrats, female representative, Marcy Kaptur announced that members dress too inappropriately and that it is an invitation to be harassed.

The meeting was private and was held to discuss sexual harassment allegations, and when representative Kaptur stood up and stated her opinion the room went into shock. Reporters and fellow representatives were in denial for what they just heard. However, Kaptur was quickly to state that she in no way meant that it was the victim’s fault.

Kaptur stated that she knew her comment would bring up discussion, but the way some women dress was bound to turn heads. She also pointed out more directly that women in the House of Representatives wore outfit that she believed to be to revealing.

Kaptur knew that she might “be booed for saying this,” but she wanted to bring attention to the problem so that it can be fixed.

Overall Kaptur thinks that the house can “elevate the decorum and the dress code to protect women from what is a pervasive problem here and in society at large.”
