As of December 14th, 2017, Net Neutrality has been repealed by the FCC.

For weeks it seems all over the internet everyone has been trying to save Net Neutrality. Particularly on twitter, everyone is tweeting about saving net neutrality and encouraging those to contact their congress men/women.

For those who don’t know, net neutrality was a safety net for all those who had access to the internet. It protected our freedom of speech and being able to have the knowledge of the world at our fingertips. It allows everyone to have free access to all social media outlets, including news outlets. Things like Google could be given a price tag and information could now be censored by the big internet providers.

Essentially the people have been stripped of their internet freedom and now are at the whim of their internet providers. The internet providers can place price tags wherever they want and censor information that conform to the provider’s specific set of beliefs.

The issue is not that we may have to pay $9.99 a month to just use Instagram. With net neutrality being repealed the concerns go much deeper.

What will happen to those who can already barley afford internet and the prices go up? The world runs on internet access, so if a multitude of the population cannot even afford it now that net neutrality has been repealed, what happens to them?

What happens to the opportunity that the internet offers? What happens to our ability to learn everything about this world in a split if someone can now censor what we see?

The repeal of net neutrality has officially altered the online world forever. There is a lot more at stake than just losing snapchat, we could lose our freedom as well.
