The holiday season has gradually become one of the most materialistic times of year in our society. A period that used to be mainly about cherishing moments with your loved ones, has evolved into a money making corporate controlled season ,with businesses collecting large profits at the expense of children’s values and morals.

Young ones are constantly exposed to television and social media outlets all year long, and during the holiday season it’s bombarding them with ads for toys, or the latest electronic that they just HAVE to have.

Black Friday has now started during dinner time on Thanksgiving, nevermind family time, its going out and fighting crowds for that perfect gift for a great deal that really matters.

I personally grew up in a home where this time of year was about doing things for those around us, and making others happy. Granted of course, me and my brother loved receiving presents, who wouldn’t? However it was always stressed to us that giving is always better than receiving. That concept has been lost completely in today’s generation.

Children think of Christmas and solely think about all the gadgets and toys they absolutely need to receive from their parents that year. Why is this? The simple answer being, how our society has changed.

Recent statistics have shown that retail sales percentages on Christmas presents have rapidly increased since 2008. It’s the commercialized society we envelope ourselves in that is causing adolescents to have this mindset.

All we can do collectively is continue to remind ourselves the true meaning of the season. Give to others and be grateful for what each and everyone of us have.
