After 2017 was filled with allegations of sexual assault against men and women in Hollywood and on Capitol Hill TIME magazine made a monumental decision in who they named their 2017 Person of the Year.

TIME awarded this award to “The Silence Breakers.” The group on the cover features just five of the women who spoke out about their experiences with sexual assault in the past year. Some high profile celebrities were a part of the group including singer Taylor Swift and actress Ashley Judd.

TIME has named a person of the year, every year, since 1927 “recognizing the person or group of people who most influenced the news during the past year, for better or for worse.”

“He said if I ever wronged him, he would have me kidnapped, have my eyes gouges out with a Bic pen and throw me into the Hudson River,” said actress Selma Blair of her abuser.

While the cover features just five victims the article shares the stories of twenty plus men and women who shared their stories about sexual assault. The people featured are not just high profile celebrities; however, they come form all walks of life.

The article tells the story of a strawberry picker, a lobbyist, a hospital worker, a director, and more as all of these people were subjected to inappropriate sexual advances in their professional and personal lives.

TIME awarded “The Silence Breakers” this prestigious honor in order to relay the message that sexual assault can and does happen everywhere and to anyone no matter their race, gender, age, or occupation. The cover of the magazine features the elbow of an unnamed women. Her elbow represents those who are unable to come forward about their experiences, according to TIME.

Controversially, President Donald Trump was the runner up of the award. Trump, himself, was accused of sexual assault during his campaign for Commander in Chief.
