On Tuesday, the Recording Academy released their nominations for the 60th Annual Grammy Awards which are set to be held on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The prestigious award is sought after by all musicians and those who aspire to be one. Winning a Grammy is the highest honor a musician can receive and now we have an insight into which artists will join “the best of the best.”

This year’s awards are set to make history as the game has been completely changed. In top categories such as “Album of the Year,” “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year” genres such as rap and R&B dominated while pop was left in the dust.

Jay-Z leads the pack with eight nominations following his critically acclaimed album “4:44”

The only pop album that was nominated for “Album of the Year” was Lorde’s Melodrama while in the “Record of the Year” category “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber was the lone pop contender.

Critics and fans alike were shocked as Ed Sheeran’s critically acclaimed chart topping album ÷ was excluded from the major categories.

This year’s nominations also made history as the Academy nominated four minority performers in the “Album of the Year” category; the most since 2005. Before 2005, the Academy had never nominated more than three minority performers in that category.

R&B newcomer, SZA, leads the female nominees with five nominations while, Jay-Z leads overall with eight nominations followed closely by Kendrick Lamar (7) and Bruno Mars (6).
