America has the most gun capita in the whole world, we have about 270 million guns and at least 40% of American households own a gun. Gun violence has increased dramatically and guns are the twelfth leading cause of death in America.

Guns are a big part of American culture and society and many politicians have been having a never ending debate on stricter gun control laws.

There is no doubt that America needs stricter gun control laws, in this past year three hundred and eighty-six mass shootings occurred. Already we have had fifteen mass shootings in November alone.

October has been one of the deadliest months, America had a total of thirty three mass shootings and one of them was the deadliest mass shooting America has ever had. The Las Vegas shooting that occurred October 1st, 2017, we lost four hundred and forty-one people and fifty-nine were wounded.

In just the past two years, America has gone through two of the deadliest mass shootings that has ever occurred in our history. The Las Vegas and Orlando shooting. The Orlando shooting occurred Sunday June 12th, 2016. Fifty people died and fifty-three people were wounded.

Mass shootings are sadly starting to become a norm for us, they occur almost every day.  At least two hundred Americans go to the emergency room every day for gun wounds.

According to Procon.org during 1999 to 2013 there has been a total of 464,033 deaths due to guns. 270,237 of those deaths(58.2%) were suicides, 174,773 (37.7%)deaths were from homicides, and 9,983 of those deaths (2.2%) were unintentional.

Gun violence is so high because in some states it is very easy to buy a gun, and many mentally ill or unstable people can buy a gun and pass the background check.

To put this in perspective here is a list of things that are harder to buy than a gun: Health insurance, a car, fireworks, and a household pet.

According to a Lancet Study, if the government required more extensive federal background checks when purchasing a gun, firearm deaths would reduce by 56.99%. If there were more background checks for ammunition purchases, firearm deaths would reduce by 80.7% and if there were more gun identification requirements, firearm death would decrease by 82.5%.

Guns are weapons, they have the ability to kill people. They shouldn’t be easier to buy than a household pet or even lawn darts.

They are serious weapons and America has experienced so much gun violence and mass shootings that we need to enact stricter gun control laws so we can reduce the violence and death that occur every day.

Gun violence should not be the norm and we shouldn’t just brush off these mass shootings.
