On October 1st 2017, 64 year old Stephen Paddock committed the largest mass shooting in modern American history. Paddock checked into a suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, snuck over 20 firearms into the room, and smashed out the windows in the room. Across the street from Paddock’s suite was the route 91 Harvest Music Festival, an annual country music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. Paddock then proceeded to shoot into the crowd of the over 22,000 people, killing 59 people and injuring over 525 others.

Stephen Paddock not only ended the lives of so many innocent people, he also traumatized thousands of others, tore families apart and ruined what should have been a peaceful and fun gathering. Despite these tragedies, Paddock is not being portrayed by the media for what he really is: a terrorist.

Magazines, newspapers and other news outlets have been describing Paddock as a kind family man who somehow derailed from his typical life. Calling him a hunting enthusiastic, christian, grandfather with no criminal background. Regardless of Paddock’s clean record, the fact is that he committed the largest mass shooting in America, surpassing the death tolls from Columbine, Sandy Hook, Virginia tech and Pulse. So why is it that a man who inflicted terror and ruined so many lives isn’t being tagged as a terrorist?

The fact that Paddock was a white, Christian male is why he isn’t being labeled as a terrorist. Whether or not American’s are willing to admit it, when thinking of the term “terrorist”, many don’t picture a middle aged white man. That’s because society has drilled it into everyone’s mind that a terrorist is someone who is middle eastern or Muslim. Rather than pinning Paddock with the title of being a terrorist, the media describes him as a typical guy, almost to make society view him as less of a bad guy. America needs to be less focused on protecting the reputation of a mass murderer, but rather more worried about exposing the truth about Paddock and making sure incidents like this do not continue to occur as they have been. At the age of 17, I have already encountered 6 of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern American history, this is proof that as a society we need to come together to decided how we will prevent anything like this from ever happening again.
